The essentials of fifth grade reading are for each student to:  decode words using phonetics and structural strategies; use the comprehension skills of inference, main idea and supporting details, summarizing, and making connections; and employing study strategies of prefixes/suffixes, fiction/nonfiction, and test-taking skills.


The essentials of fifth grade math are for each student to:  read and write numbers through the hundredths and millions; multiply 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers with regrouping; divide 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers with remainders; and add, subtract, and simplify fractions with like denominators.

The standards of fifth grade social studies are for each student to:  demonstrate skills for historical analysis; explain the structure and operation of the United States economy and the role of citizens as producers and consumers; summarize the rights and responsibilities of United States citizens; and demonstrate improved skills in historical research and geographical analysis.

The standards of fifth grade writing are for each student to:  write compositions with organization, content, word choice, voice, sentence fluency and standard English conventions after revising and editing; demonstrate the use of multiple forms to write for different audiences and purposes.
